Alarming news from Darfur: violence claimed almost 600 lives in May –– more than any other month since U.N. peacekeepers arrived in 2008.
In April, dictator Omar al-Bashir claimed victory in Sudan’s fraudulent elections. While the world has looked away, he has been emboldened in his efforts to crack down on all who oppose him. The REAL results of the election are harassment and imprisonment of Bashir’s critics, more clashes between rebel groups and the government, new aerial bombing over Darfur, and rising civilian casualties.

I was there. In February, I met with Darfuris living in displacement camps. I spoke with mothers, children, and camp leaders. They wanted to return home and rebuild their lives, but fear dominates their vision of the future. The dedicated U.N. peacekeepers I met with were overtaxed, underequipped, and often unable to even travel out to meet with Darfuris who needed them most, due to constant threat of violence and kidnapping.
News reports confirm that the situation has gotten dramatically worse – more people died in May than in any other month since U.N. peacekeepers arrived in 2008.
Make no mistake: The situation in Darfur is rapidly deteriorating. What we do now could determine the fate of thousands of civilians.
