Of course, the caste system in India is a human rights abuse. To me, it is a slur on our Indian race that even after 60 years of independence, the caste system is in practice. Consider the case of a student (in any school in India) when he is asked to write his caste. It is this moment when a boy or girl comes to know that he belongs to a particular caste. In spite of all the big claims made by India in development and removal of discrimination against the dalits, the caste system continues to thrive. Perhaps no serious efforts have been made by the governments whether at the centre or at the state to abrogate this barbaric caste system. Rather, it has accentuated as the reservation for SC/ST/OBC and other minorities have been given scope in employment generation.
The dalits so far have not come out of this mental state in spite of enjoying a very high status because they donot want to lose their high status. Only a few of dalits have got the benefits of SC/ST reservation whereas a large chunk of their brothers are still below the poverty line. If the creamy layers of high ups of dalits could be removed, the fruits of reservations could have reached to the other dalits.
There should be no reservation in jobs on the basis of caste. rather it should be on the basis of economic criteria. The government should create enabling environments for capacity building among the poor sections of the society irrespective of caste.
As long as the caste system is not rooted out from India the inequality based on hierarchical positions of different castes would continue.
Due to this age old rigid caste system, the human equality has not been established in India. There have been various social reforms movements like the Arya Samaj. But when the conceot of marriage comes, the followers of this sect continue to marry their sons or daughters in their own caste. Hence, this system is still discriminatory, and it needs to wiped out from India.

Julie, I was about to submit a saga of my single mother life hoping to find some sort of encouragement. I know you are hoping for someone to provide the secret for happiness and the way...I am touched by your reality and I don't have words to inspire only to let you know you have inspired me today. I went to church today seeking God's wisdom...the message was about answers to our prayers...the response is never a quick definitive only No, Slow, Grow, or Go. Only God knows when your time for your prayers and needs will be answered. I speak this b/c I too am waiting and often tired but I have faith He will be with me and with you even though it may feel the energy and strength to persevere are without reserve. Faith and hope and lots of prayer sound intangible but will reveal tangible for our children. God Bless you. You are an amazing person esp. for 22.
